The area has a rich history, the most significant event being its use as a training ground for King Kamehameha the Great’s year-long preparation for the invasion of Oahu in the 1790s. Hoolehua was settled as an agricultural community in the 1920s, but locals were forced to lease their lands to large plantations. Today, the plantations are no longer active, and locals have come back to use the area for agriculture, growing fruits, vegetables, and herbs.
