International oil prices have been changing unexpectedly and inexplicably around the world. Fuel being one of the major cost factors for airlines, has risen over 50% after the launch of Nairobi – London route in 2007. Furthermore, passengers travelling this route have dropped drastically after the increase in aviation taxes in Britain. The airline states that the British Air Passenger Duty has been raised over 100% accordingly.
Therefore, Virgin Atlantic confirms to stop the Nairobi London route due to decrease in passengers and high fuel costs. The airline operates five times a week to Kenya, Nairobi. The final Virgin Atlantic flight from London will be on September 23rd and September 24th from Nairobi.
However, the airline further plans to utilise their aircrafts on routes which highlights growth in passenger travelling. Hence the flight will be financially feasible to face the challenging times of fixed costs such as international fuel prices.
