Bridgetown Declared As a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Bridgetown is the biggest city in Barbados, which also serves as the capital. Bridgetown is a popular tourist destination in West Indies.

In year 2002 UNESCO Convention, Barbados became a signatory for the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage Convention. Thereafter, the capital city was nominated. On the 35th session at the UNESCO Headquarters, Paris – Bridgetown was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Bridgetown was considered for its ‘outstanding example of British colonial architecture which also reflects the Great Britain’s Atlantic colonial empire ’.

Furthermore, highlights the African and British historic heritage with the touch of Caribbean and Amerindian past. These are well preserved and best displayed through the museums in the city. In vicinity are the old buildings that date back centuries, Jacobean homes to Georgian and Pavilion architecture and state plantations are great examples for the rich historic heritage.

In discussion, it was stated Bridgetown is home to world’s rarest 17th century iron canons. Cannons were scattered throughout the entire city from gardens, cellars, beaches to buildings and undergrounds.

The military garrison along with the plethora of historic buildings are a major part of the UNESCO heritage site. It was mentioned, the military Garrison was the largest in British colonies during the 18th and 19th centuries. Check our cheap flights listings online.
