TripAdvisor: Losing Credibility or Reaching Popularity

As privileged as it seems to enjoy raving comments on restaurants, places to see, and things to do and places to stay, TripAdvisor is under fire with the hottest news of rating a non-existent restaurant on top reviews.

It appeared on top of the list of top restaurants for the strings of raving complements for its service, staff and more importantly on the luscious food. The restaurant was praised as ‘perfect’, ‘amazing’, culinary creations, including some reviewing it to be awarded as a Michelin star dinning place.

Being on top for the most visited and reviewed site for top attractions, accommodation and places to eat, TripAdvisor faces a great dilemma, leaving travellers vulnerable to tourist traps. Majority of customer reviews are genuine, nevertheless this has unfairly besmirched the reputation and the image of one of the unbiased travel websites for travel advice, reviews and opinions.

This not only leaves a question, to the discerning travellers, of trust but more importantly, it is a doubt on credibility. However, this also sheds light to travellers to ensure the reviews and opinions of like-minded travellers are not the only viable option, but consider other reliable sources.
