Visit Mount Avila
Mount Avila is an imposing presence in Caracas; towering a 1,000 metres over the city. You can visit the summit by cable car. This is quite a rewarding feat as the cable car ride affords gorgeous vies of the city, beaches and beautiful Caribbean Sea. At the top are restaurants and other attractions.
Casa Natal del Libertador
The ‘Liberator’; Simon Bolivar’s childhood home and birthplace in 1783 is now a functioning museum. The beautiful Spanish style house is a national monument housing many valuable artefacts that chronicle the battles through paintings. The fountain that once belonged to the Caracas church, where Bolivars was baptised is re-located and sits in the house patio.
Casa Amarilla
Also called the Yellow House this neo classical building from the 17th century was declared a national monument in 1979. During colonial times this was the royal prison and home of the General Captaincy. Shackles and iron chains are still there in the gallows. A must visit for culture buffs.
Palacio de Miraflores
First owned by General Joaquin Crespo the palace took many years to construct. It was later taken over as the presidential palace in the 1900’s; interestingly it was one of the first buildings to withstand an earthquake. Today state functions and meetings are held within this beautiful building.
El Palacio de las Academios
Located in the Cathedral Parish construction of the building started in 1577. It was originally meant to be a residence for Franciscan Monks. In 1952 it was turned into the Palace of Academics and declared a national monument for its beautiful Neo-Gothic line of architecture.
Iglesia San Francisco
The San Francisco Church is home to beautiful paintings that chronicle religious art throughout the ages. It is not as large as the Cathedral but is famous as the site where Simon Bolivar was declared Liberator and also where his funeral was held. It is an interesting browse for art lovers.
The Museum of Contemporary Art
The best collection of modern art across the whole of South America is housed within this museum. Fabulous works of art by Pablo Picasso are also on display together with other prominent artist from Argentina and around the world.
The National Pantheon
Declared the Nacinal Pantheon in 1875 this was formerly the Church of the Holy Trinidad. Originally the structure consisted of colonial style architecture, however Neo-Gothic styles were later added on to make the place the first of its kind in Venezuela. Inside are many artefacts ideal for history buffs.
Parque del Este
Ideal for spending leisure time at; the park is popular for picnics, footballs, walking, jogging and relaxing in verdant climes. There is a small zoo attached.
Caracas Cathedral
Rebuilt around 1665 and 1713 after a fire destroyed it; the church boasts a beautiful hand carved alter. It is also home to the Museo Sacro de Caracas. Located in Plaza Bolivar the cathedral is also where the Bolivar Chapel is located.
