State Capital Building
With architecture similar to the buildings in the nation’s capital, this building was designed in the 19th century by Elijah E. Myers and is located at the top of Capitol Hill. 45 minute tours take place every day here and are free of charge. Items that were used to construct this building was quarried rose onyx and 200 ounces of gold leaf. The 13th step of the building is located exactly a mile above sea level.
Denver Firefighters Museum
This fire station was originally built in 1909 and was later converted into a museum in 1978. All the exhibits here explore the history of firefighting in Denver. Get the opportunity to see old steam equipment and even slide down the pole and get dressed up in firefighters gear. The upstairs area of the museum was once the firefighters sleeping quarters. A part of the gallery specially targets children and includes fire safety education.
Elitch Gardens Theme Park
This theme park was first opened in 1890 and gets its name from the gardens where it was originally located. Since 1994 the park has been in downtown Denver and more rideshave been added. It was opened by John and Mary Elitch on their farm. The most popular ride at the park is the roller coaster Twister II and also includes a water park with slides and a wave pool especially for the summer months.
Washington Park
This park is one of Denver’s finest and is more commonly known as Wash Park. It covers 165 acres of land and is a famous running trail in the city. Adding to the beauty of the park is the two lakes and the largest flower garden in the city. The recreational center in the middle of the park has a charge of $5 a day and has a pool.
Millennium Bridge
The Millennium Bridge has the honor of being known as the world’s first cable stayed bridge that has used a post-tensioned structural construction. It is quite impressive to look at with its cables and 200 foot white mast giving off a dramatic feel. The bridge cost $9 million to build and was opened on April 22, 2002.
Mesteno
The Mesteno is a 32 foot blue stallion that is also known as ‘Bluecifer’ and is located near the Denver International Airport. It was created by Luis Jimenez who died when one of the stallion’s legs fell on him during the course of its construction. The stallion is blue in color with red gleaming eyes.
Colorado Sports Hall of Fame
Located at Mile High Stadium in the Sports Authority Field, this museum is dedicated to sporting accomplishments in Colorado. Most of the exhibits are about the Denver Broncos football team and other sports and are grouped under headings like ‘endurance’ and ‘sacrifice’. The first group was inducted into the hall of fame in 1965.
Bronco Buster
This sculpture of a cowboy trying to stay aboard a horse is made of bronze and was sculpted by Alexander Phimister Procter in 1920. The sculpture is located at Civic Center Park. The original sculpture was created in 1893 and as it began to deteriorate Proctor was commissioned to create a new bronze sculpture and the Bronco Buster was born.
Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre
This unique and natural theatre is set between 400 foot red sandstone rocks and was once a Ute camping spot. Many artists have recorded live albums here as the acoustics are great. It has 9,000 seats and offers great views. Famous bands have even had concerts here. It was opened on June 15, 1941 and has an elevation of 6,450 feet. The park also offers guided tours, hiking and biking trails.
United States Mint
The Denver Mint where 7.5 billion coins are produced every year offers free tours that include guides on weekdays. The first coins here were produced on February 1, 1906. It is still in operation and produces coins for circulation for general use as well as mint sets and commemorative coins. It is the single largest producer of coins in the world.
