Casa Colorada
Translating to Red House in Spanish, this is Chichen Itza’s best preserved building. One of the chambers within features extensive hieroglyphs name a number of rulers of Chichen Itza and also rulers of the nearby city Ek Balam. Also inscribed here is a Maya date that ties in to around 869 AD making it one of the oldest discovered dates in Chichen Itza. Some also believe that the Casa Colorada may have been an elite residence.
Temple of the Bearded Man
This temple gets its name from the center figure found inside that has a carving on its chin that looks like facial hair. It is also known as the North Temple and has detailed bas-relief carvings on the inner walls. Towards the south end of this temple the ruins of a much bigger temple can also be found.
La Iglesia
This building was named La Iglesia, which translates to ‘the Church’ in Spanish, most probably because a nunnery was located right by it. It is also known as one of the oldest buildings in Chichen Itza. Two of the upper stories are decorated with Masks of Chac, along with an armadillo, a crab, a snail and a tortoise which represent Maya Gods known as Bacah who had to hold up the sky.
Tomb of the High Priest
This step-pyramid temple has a staircase on each side and is also known as the Osario temple. It stands on top of a natural limestone cave where skeletons and offerings were found which is how the temple got its name. Although after further study and excavations of the temple archeologists now believe that it may have not been a tomb and no priests were buried there.
Sacred Cenote
This is a sinkhole that connects to Chichen Itza by a raised pathway and may be how Chichen Itza received its name which is translated to ‘Well of the Itzaes’. The Sacred Cenote was used for ceremonial circumstances and through the years many different artifacts have been found here including gold, jade, copper, turquoise, obsidian, copal, pottery, rubber, shells and bones of about 200 people who were offered as sacrifices.
Temple of the Skulls
The Temple of the Skulls or Tzompantli is one of the most gruesome temples that can be found in Chichen Itza. It consists of a low platform and is covered on all sides by carved skulls. In ancient times, the heads of victims of sacrifice were displayed here along with the heads of those who lost the ball game.
Main Ball Court
There are a total number of 8 ball courts that can be found in Chichen Itza, but at 166 by 68 meters this Main Ball Court is the largest and the best. Dedicated in 864 AD it is vastly different from any other Mayan ball court most of which are much smaller and have sloping side courts. Both the walls at this Main Ball Court depict scenes of the ball player teams.
El Caracol
This observatory dates back to 906 AD, it is round in shape and stands on a large square platform. Found to be most probably an ancient Maya Observatory all of its doors and windows have been positioned towards astronomical events. This tower gave the Mayan’s a clear view of the sky without any obstruction.
Temple of the Warriors
This temple gets its name from the numerous carved pillars that surround it depicting warriors. A statue known as Chac Mool sits at the summit of the temple in the form of a reclining figure propped up on its elbows with a bowl on its stomach. A series of exposed columns on the South wall of the temple show proof that it may have supported a roof system. The columns stand in three distinct sections, the west group, the north group and the northeast group.
Temple of Kukulkan
Standing in the middle of an open court this temple was dedicated to the feathered serpent god Quetzalcoatl. It is the most famous landmark in Chichen Itza. During the Spring and Autumn equinox the rising and setting sun causes the pyramid to cast a shadow in the shape of a snake and as the sun moves the shape descends into the earth. It also has many important references to the Mayan calendar.
