Old Ciutedella
This town’s narrow cobbled lanes hold much interest with its elegant palaces and ornate churches such as the Esglesia Del Roser that was built in the 17th century. The town also hosts shops, restaurants and bars and its fish market that is housed in a Modernista building that was constructed in 1895.
Fort Marlborough
The British started constructing Fort Marlborough in 1710 after they occupied Minorca to possess its deep natural harbour. It took 16 years to build. A tour of this fort takes 45 minutes and includes a video that explains the civil and military historical background of the site. The fort is located on the southern shore at the mouth of Mahon Harbor.
Pedreres de’s Hostal
The Pedreres De’s Hostal are vast stone quarries that have been exploited by powerful machines extracting the sandstone for building material until 1994. Today, its deep pits provide amazing acoustics making it a popular venue for concerts. The botanical garden here has a variety of endemic Minorcan species of plants and the Medieval Garden has a fountain.
Parc Natural S’Albufera D’es Grau
This large freshwater lagoon is separated from the coast by a barrier of high sand dunes. It is home to a variety of wetland birds and is a stop for other migrating species. This lagoon is a part of Minorca’s Biosphere Reserve that is protected from development. It’s a great place for birdwatching.
Naveta Des Tudons
Located just a few kilometers out of Ciutedella, the Naveta Des Tudons is a stone buriel chamber that was constructed around 1000 BC. It is considered the most symbolical archeological remains In Minorca. It is very well preserved and was used as a collective funeral monument. The human bodies that have been found inside had been buried with items such as bronze jewelry, weapons and ceramic bowls.
Bodegas Binifadet
The Bodegas Binifadet is Minorca’s largest winery. It stands as one of the first modern wineries to be established here. The first vine was planted here by local man Carlos Angles in 1979. It covers an area of about 18 hectares and produces around 55,000 bottles of wine every year. You have the option of touring the vineyards alone or joining a 30 minute tour that ends with a wine tasting, trying out their grape jelly and Minorcan goat cheese.
La Mola Fortress
This fortress was built in the mid 19th century and was set over Mao harbor. It is a great example of the periods Spanish military architecture. The fort was armed with canons such as the Krupp 30.5 cm and 26 cm, the Ordonez 24 cm and the Munaiz 15 cm. On a guided tour of the fort you will be able to see the unserground magazines and loading chambers where the canons were loaded.
St. Philip’s Castle
This castle was originally built in 1554 and then rebuilt by the British in the 1760’s. It was the fortress that guarded the entrance to the port of Mahon. Best known in history for its unsuccessful defense twice by the British during sieges that took place in 1756 and 1781 it was demolished after the latter event.
Museu De Menorca
This used to be a Franciscan Monastery that was built in the 15th century and includes exhibits about the earliest history of the island including the Roman, Byzantine, and Muslim eras and also displays a few recent paintings. The exhibits are spread over two floors and also has an assembly room.
Minorcan Cheese Museum
Minorca has been a famous place for cheese being produced by age long traditional processes for 25 years so it is only fit that there should be a cheese museum to honor this. On a tour of this museum you can see how the cheese is made and be able to taste the various cheeses that are made there for free. The cheeses here range from mature cheese that has been aged for 8-9 months to the more lighter 21 day cheese.
