Casa-Museo de Colón
This fascinating museum documents this history of Columbus’s famous voyages and features exhibits on the historical role played by the Canary islands as a staging post for transatlantic shipping. The model galleon on the ground floor is particularly impressive to children and adults alike. An art gallery is also included.
Playa de las Canteras
This 3km stretch of soft yellow sand is magnificent, and is considered by many to be one of the world’s best beaches next to a city. There is an attractive seaside promenade that frees everyone from the traffic. Perhaps the most magnificent attraction here is the reef known as La Barra.
Museo Elder de la Ciencia y la Tecnología
A dockside warehouse has been revamped to create this 21st century museum. The most fascinating part of this is that it contains a lot of gadgetry that whirr, clank, and hum. Spend a few hours in this well-crafted museum and pilot a supersonic fighter plane and see how rockets work.
Catedral de Santa Ana & Museo Diocesano de Arte Sacro
Named the spiritual heart of the city, this grey cathedral was begun in the early 15th century. soon after the Spanish conquest. The cathedral took 350 years to complete and contains a neoclassical façade that contrasts greatly with the interior. Its lofty columns are said to be fashioned on palm trees.
Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno
The city’s main modern art museum is housed in a tastefully rejuvenated 18th century building. There are no permanent collections, but the galleries, flooded with natural light, host some superb temporary exhibitions. There are two satellite galleries also featuring rotating exhibitions: one near Casa de Colon, and the other based in a former hospital.
Casa-Museo de Pérez Galdós
The Canary Islands’ most famous writer, Benito Pérez Galdós, was born in this house in the heart of old Las Palmas. After spending his first 19 years here, he moved on to Madrid and literary greatness. Guided tours, available in English, explore the rooms upstairs, with the author’s reconstructed study.
Designed by artist Néstor Martín Fernández de la Torre and built by his brother Miguel, this mock Canarian village borders the gardens of the Parque Doramas. It is seemingly in a state of disrepair but is worth visiting on Sunday mornings as traditional folk music is played here at 11:30a.m.
This slightly old-fashioned yet still fascinating museum chronicles Gran Canaria’s pre-conquest history. It claims the boast of having the largest collection of Cro-Magnon skulls in the world. There are also several mummies, plus a collection of pottery and other Guanche implements from across the island. The gift shop stocks some excellent children’s educational material.
Parque San Telmo
The Iglesia de San Telmo, on the south-western side of this paved park, was one of the first religious buildings in town. Beside it is a tourist information kiosk and, in the northwestern corner, a modernist kiosk, which these days functions as a classy cafe for breakfast, sandwiches or coffee.
Dating from 1844, this ornate historical building is a national monument. It was the island’s first theatre and retains an old-world display of faded elegance, with a gracious internal patio and bookcase-lined rooms. The place now functions as a private club, although the fancy terrace restaurant is open to all.
