Casa de los Coroneles
This is an 18th Century building that has been carefully restored to its former glory, retaining its traditional central patio and wooden galleries. The ground floor is now an exhibition space for temporary displays of world-class modern art, while upstairs you will find exhibits on the history of the building.
Museo del Queso Majorero
This new museum is among the best in the Canary Islands, with lots of interactive displays. This is one that the kids will enjoy very much as the touch-button exhibits contain great information on the island’s flora and fauna. Adults can get an education on Majorero cheese production and tasting.
Centro de Arte Canario
This museum should be a highlight of all trips to the island. It contains a sculpture garden and galleries containing works of art by Canarian artists such as César Manrique, Ruben Dario and Alberto Agullo. Two galleries are devoted to the national award-winning watercolourist Alberto Manque (no relation to César).
Casa Museo Unamuno
The philosopher Miguel de Unamuno stayed in this location in 1924 after being exiled from Spain. This building has been converted into a museum in his honour. This single storied house has been converted into a period piece, with four rooms furnished from Unamuno’s day. Brochures are available in English.
Casa Santa María
Although unabashedly tourist-oriented, this is a place well worth visiting. The owner bought this original building in 1990 and spent several years collecting traditional handicrafts and ancient agricultural tools. The gardens are also lushly landscaped. The highlight of the museum is the 3D underwater film of the local coastal life.
Parque Natural de Corralejo
This nature park stretches along the east coast of the island for about 10km from Corralejo. It is popular among windsurfers and kiteboarders owing to the breezy conditions. The area is known as Grandes Playas and is free to enter, with sunloungers and umbrellas available for hire in the hotels.
Iglesia de Santa María
This church, which dates back to the early 17th century, has a magnificent stone floor, an attractive wooden ceiling, and an elaborate baroque altar. The sacristy with its display of vestments, altarware and carved wooden ceiling in shades of gold and red, are among the highlights of this celebrated church.
Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Regla
This is a unique church as its exterior was inspired by the architecture and culture of the Aztecs, with animal motifs on display. This 17th century church has many more Mexican influences than the baroque excesses of mainland Spain. Don’t miss the view upwards, as there is a magnificent ceiling.
Ecomuseo la Alcogida
This is a journey back to the not-too-distant past. The restored agricultural hamlet displays how things were before modernisation took over. Furnished houses, outbuildings, and domestic animals abound. You will find local artisans making lace and wicker baskets throughout the hamlet. A gift shop and a bar are also included.
Playa de la Barca
If you are into wind surfing or kite surfing, this is the perfect place to go to in the Canary Islands. Not far from Fuerteventura is the Playa de la Barca, with a powdery white beach that is almost 200m wide. Amazingly, high tide creates a lagoon safe for children.
