Placed strategically at the jaws of Africa and Europe, Gibraltar, with its stunning Palladian architecture and lively population of camera-loving Barbary macaques, is full of sublime surprises. Also known as ‘The Rock’ or ‘Gib’, Gibraltar is a cacophony of Spanish, North African and English cultures. Famous for its subtropical climate, Gibraltar is a beautiful monolithic peninsula riddled with curious caves and tunnels. On the top of its limestone base, unique vegetation thrives as well as many species of migrating birds. With stunning views and glorious attractions, this little Brisitsh enclave on the Mediterranean is awash with wonders making holidays in Gibraltar an experience to relish. Topping the list of places to visit in Gibraltar is the St Michael's Cave. To be found inside the Rock, St Michael’s Cave is placed a 1000ft above sea level and is known for its spectacular stalactite and stalagmite formations. The cave is part of a complex series of interlinked caves, including the Lower St Michael's Cave and Leonara’s Cave. Today, this cave is used to host concerts and ballads. The Upper Galleries that were hewn by hand from the Rock itself house tableaux and old cannons from the Great Siege.
Gibraltar Museum is another must-see attraction. Famous for the display of the replica of the Gibraltar Skull – the first Neanderthal skull found in Europe - and caveman tools and ornaments excavated from the Rock's caves, this museum also showcases exhibits from the Phoenician, Greek, Roman, Moorish, Spanish and British periods of Gibraltar’s history. The museum also houses a comprehensive collection of prints and lithographs, and a large-scale model of the Rock made in 1865, making it a treasure trove for history buffs. For a taste of some mystery and fun, visit the Haunted Convent. This convent at the end of Main Street was formerly a 16th-century Franciscan Monastic house and has been the residence of the governor since 1728. Visitors can watch the daily changing of the guards but the real draw is the rumour that the convent is haunted by the ghost of a nun, known as the ‘Lady in Grey’. While on a travel to Gibraltar, take a quiet stroll to the Trafalgar Cemetery which is the town’s ancient but intricately well-kept cemetery just off Main Street at Southport Gate. Perilous sea battles took their toll and many lives lost at sea are commemorated here. Gibraltar is also peppered with a number of great beaches that are perfect to kick back and relax or explore. On the eastern side are the picture-perfect Catalan Bay and the Eastern Beach. On the western side is a quaint little pebble beach called Little Bay and Keys Promenade or Camp Bay. A range of water activities can be enjoyed from the beaches too, including pier fishing, parasailing, water skiing and scuba diving.
