Look for Manatees in the Botanic Gardens

The Georgetown Botanic Gardens are home to some the country’s treasures plant specimens. Entrance is free and the wide open spaces are ideal for enjoying a family excursion. Look out for the manatees swimming in the ponds around the entrance area.

Visit the Promenade Gardens

The Promenade Gardens do justice to Georgetown’s reputation as ‘The Garden City of the Caribbean’. The beautiful garden is resplendent with flowering shrubs and lots of birds that flock there at sunset. Promenade Gardens are an annexure of the Independence Park.

Browse Stabroek Market

During the Dutch colonial period Georgetown was known as Stabroek; today the Stabroek Market is an iconic attraction. A must visit site in Georgetown the place is a bustling muddle of shoppers and eager sellers. Ideal for some local flavour the market is home to some vintage buildings.

The National Museum

The National Museum of Georgetown is an interesting browse for its curios mix of artefacts. On one level you will find scale models of the colonial buildings in the town, together with sail ships and other knick knacks like old bottles and beautifully carved pipes. There is even a 60’s period Rolls Royce.

Shopping in the Commercial Districts

Shopaholics should head over to the commercial areas around Regent Street; there plastic goods, clothing, watches, jewellery and other goods are available at very cheap prices. Apart for Stabroek Market, check out Bourda Market for fresh fruits and vegetables, household items and much more.

Explore the Streets of Georgetown

Spend a day wandering around the streets of Georgetown and you will come across many little treasures. The streets and alleys are lined with colonial era wooden structures housing; homes, churches, schools and government buildings. The walk is quite a treat for culture buffs.

Head Over to St Georges Cathedral

Enter the confines of St Georges Cathedral and be enthralled by the magnificent architecture. The main body is constructed of wood while the ceiling is a hue of dark and light colours. The church alter is protected by a filigree white fence; within is a vintage pipe organ. The walls are adorned with photos 19th and 20th century residents of Georgetown.

Kaietuer Falls

One for nature lovers the flight to the falls is quite rewarding. The 50 minute flight over wilderness is breath-taking. Kaieteuer Falls is the only place that you can spot the elusive Golden Frog.

Georgetown Zoo

The Guyana Zoo located in the city is home to a range of exotic animals from across South America. Otters and giant ant eaters promise to thrill and impress while the birds are an exotic collection of colour.

The Sea Wall

Since many of the houses in Georgetown are built below the flood level, the sea wall was constructed to protect. Built with the use of slave labour the wall was completed by 1882. The place is popular amongst lovers, joggers and tourists out to admire the view.
