An archaeological and architectural monument, the Galle Fort was built in the 17th century by the Dutch. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features well maintained ramparts and stonewalls that enclose an area of 36 hectares. The Galle Fort comprises of low houses resembling the Dutch colonial style, historic churches, magnificent mosques, commercial and government buildings.
Located in the oldest Dutch building in the Galle Fort, the National Museum exhibits artifacts from the Portuguese, Dutch and British periods. This Museum comprises 3 galleries that showcase the work of Galle area’s cottage industries, displays the furniture and weaponry used by the Dutch and provides archaeological evidence on the close relationship between Sri Lanka and China.
Sinharaja Forest Reserve
A biosphere reserve and UNESCO World Heritage site, the Sinharaja Forest is a hilly virgin rainforest that is a treasure trove of endemic species. The striking features of the Sinharaja Forest are its mixed feeding bird flocks, lofty trees, purple-faced langurs and its extraordinary collection of butterflies, fish, mammals and amphibians.
Popularly known as the Pointe De Galle Light, this spectacular lighthouse stands at 87 ft high and is strategically located in the ramparts of Galle Fort presenting a complete view of the Galle harbor. This glorious onshore Lighthouse offers panoramic views of the Galle Fort and its surrounding beaches from its peak.
National Maritime Museum
Located in the elegant Dutch warehouse above the Old Gate of Galle Fort, the Maritime Museum exhibits marine artifacts found from underwater explorations. The Maritime Museum showcases artifacts like boat models, maps, naval craft, beer mugs, earthenware and sailor shoes, some of which are believed to be over 800 years old.
An iconic landmark in Galle, the striking clock tower is over 100 years old and was built as a tribute to a renowned Burgher surgeon. Located within the ramparts of the Galle Fort, the Clock Tower is four stories high, showcases sculptures at its feet and overlooks the Central Moon Bastion.
Lankagama Duwili Ella Falls
A popular trekking destination off Galle, the Lankagama Duwilli Ella Falls is a stunning waterfall that cascades through forests and features a base of 23 m. This magnificent waterfall conceals a legendary cave known as a famous religious hiding place. The amazing natural landscapes and breathtaking wildlife add to the appeal of this waterfall.
Famously known as the Dutch Reformed Church, Groote Kerk is located at the entrance of the Galle Fort. Featuring a Doric-style architecture, the Church is decorated with unusual double scroll molding unique to Groote Kerk. A visit to this Old Protestant Church will enlighten visitors on the culture and religious beliefs of the 18th century.
Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Art Museum
The home of renowned Sri Lankan author of yesteryear Martin Wickramasinghe, this Museum depicts the writings of this famous author. The Museum complex features an exotic eco-system that includes a variety of indigenous trees, shrubs and birds. Among the exhibits of this Museum are Buddhist artifacts, rural technological instruments, crafts, kitchen utensils and cultural objects.
Old Dutch Hospital
An elegant colonial building which has been beautifully restored, the Old Dutch Hospital is an exotic shopping and dining precinct. This heritage building features massive teak beams, long open verandas and wooden staircases. Home to luxurious restaurants, cozy coffee shops and branded stores, the Dutch Hospital is a wonderful shopping destination at the Galle Fort.
