Kolkata is the metropolis of West Bengal and the second biggest city in India (following Mumbai). If Bangalore is the Seattle of India, then Kolkata is the main-lands London. It is an 'in your face' city that jolts and delights the unknowing travellers. Miserable scarcity blends oddly with disintegrating British Raj-period jewels, stretched gardens and ancient colleges. Long known as the ethnic metropolis of India, Kolkata remains to produce groups of poets, authors, film makers and Nobel Prize champions. If your tour only permits for a visit of one or two of India's urbane cities, then absolutely think of putting Kolkata on your list. Love it or hate it, you certainly won't neglect the metropolis on the Hooghly. Being in Bengal, the native dialect of the people of Kolkata is Bengali. But, most knowledgeable locals converse in Hindi and English as well, and various others would have an essential requirement of English. They also like to converse in Khettrish now and then. A huge amount of the street sellers and taxi drivers are not from Bengal and are resident Hindi speakers.
